It surprises me that a show that is all about the typical vision of beauty and young girls hasn’t come under too much fire in the past; but now all of that is changing. On the March 26 episode of America’s Next Top Model, apparently a model was doing a photo shoot and was instructed to lie naked in a bed such as Marilyn Monroe once had. TV Guide says,
“Council president Tim Winter nevertheless called the shoot “irresponsible” and said it “crossed the legal threshold for broadcast indecency.”
He added, “This is not simply a matter of artistic freedom, as some might claim. Rather, this is about a television network intentionally pushing the envelope to establish a new acceptable nudity standard for the broadcast medium.”
Winter maintained that the segment was uncalled for and irrelevant to the Tyra Banks-hosted modelling show. “The entire photo shoot scene, which lasted for more than a minute, is wholly gratuitous and undoubtedly intended to titillate,” he said.
“Parents and families are fed up with such blatant and continued disregard for decency standards.”
This is an interesting issue. Are the teen girls that watch the show really so innocent that they don’t realize these girls are doing a photo shoot? This is a depiction of the modeling world and this, and much worse, is what happens in the modeling world. Is it not up to the parents to discuss this with their children, ask them what they think about it, and start an open discussion? Is it really Tyra Banks’ job to do this? Now, I’m generally not a supporter of Ms. Banks but I feel in this case her show may be being unfairly judged.
The model on the show was covered in sheets and cameras were placed in just the right spot to block the viewer from seeing anything. And Top Model has always done one photo shoot where the girls are naked. Nothing has ever been seen and again, it’s just to get the point across to the girls that they will have to do this type of thing to succeed in the modelling world. Whether that world is right or wrong is up for the girl to decide but I think this is another case of people having too much time on their hands.
The mere thought of Tyra Banks generally makes me cringe but the latest on her makes me cringe for reasons that are entirely different. Tyra has had her own stalker since January, Brady Green, who has been hounding her with phone calls and letters since the beginning of 2008. He recently showed up at the studio where she tapes The Tyra Banks Show. If that’s not creepy enough, he also brang with him a bag full of newspaper clippings and other paraphanelia that referred to his stalking. From New York Post,
“Cops finally busted the burly ex-con drifter Tuesday for allegedly stalking Banks from coast to coast, but he was released without bail - an act that has added to her anxiety.
Brady Green, 37, has hounded Banks with multiple letters and phone calls since early January, cops and prosecutors said.
He then started sending her flowers and showing up in person at her Los Angeles TV studio, they said.
The Dublin, Ga., native then took a bus to New York with the idea of visiting the studio where “The Tyra Banks Show” is taped. He arrived in the lobby at 4:23 p.m. on Tuesday, asking to speak to the former supermodel, the authorities said.
Green was carrying a large duffel bag stuffed with magazine write-ups about Banks and notes to himself about his various attempts to reach her, they said.
Cops were called to the scene, where Banks said she feared for her safety. Green was cleared from the premises.”
According to a witness, Green lives on the streets despite his clean-shaven appearance. Green was arrested in a restaurant but he was set back onto streets, no bail required, just a few short hours later. As if that’s no bad enough for Banks’ stalker, he already had two convictions against him in 2007. Just another little something that screams, “Put this man behind bars!”
As said earlier, I’m not usually one to jump to the defense of Tyra Banks but no one should have to feel scared when doing their job or at home. And stalkers should serve jail time, especially when they’ve recently had two arrests. Hopefully, there are people looking for this maniac right now to put him where he belongs but with laws as screwed up as they sometimes are, he probably needs to do something else before they can arrest him.
