Is What Dave Letterman Did Really So Bad?

So it came out on Thursday night’s Late Show that David Letterman has had affairs with some of the young females on his staff in the past. I have to admit, Letterman is a bit past my bedtime so, I wasn’t up to see his on-air admission. But it was everywhere the next day so I did catch up quickly. From what I saw, Letterman told his side of the story before anyone else could and he was quite cavalier about the whole entire thing. He kind of told the story about sleeping with some of his employees nonchalantly and as though he didn’t understand why any of us would have a problem with it.

What was most important to him was that his audience knew that he was being blackmailed, he had gone on the offensive about it, and he just wanted us to know. On with the show…Well, being blackmailed he was and it wasn’t actually by any of the women that he slept with. It was  Stephanie Birkitt’s boyfriend who was blackmailing the late night host. Stephanie Birkitt worked for Letterman in the past as his “assistant” and they are said to have had a relationship for quite a significant period of time. Her boyfriend, Robert “Joe” Halderman, is the producer of 48 Hours and found some incriminating evidence against Letterman clearly indicating that he had a relationship with Birkitt. Birkitt, supposedly, is mortified.

So, what’s the problem? Other than the fact that he’s being blackmailed? Other than the fact that he’s sleeping with women who are much younger than he is, which in itself I don’t find that bad, but who work for him, which I find kind of despicable. The biggest problem though is that I think the whole blackmail twist on this puts Dave in a good light. When really, he’s scum who cheated on his girlfriend, quite frequently, up until she became pregnant with their child. I think David Letterman is hard to dislike. And I think he’s being painted as a victim when maybe he’s not so much. Celebitchy has found some facts that all point to Dave being a schmuck. But then even Celebitchy started to side with Dave. I just don’t get it. From Gawker via Celebitchy,

“As revealed last night, Late Night host David Letterman could be an especially good boss to some of his more special assistants. The show’s staff has long buzzed upon the attentions Dave bestows upon his favorites.

• Letterman had a cadre of female assistants who fell heavily on the young and attractive side of the ledger. He was said to employ as not less than three of these Special Assistants to the Host last year. The assistant tally however, was said to have climbed as high as five at moments.

• The scuttlebutt on the set had it that current assistant-in-question, Stephanie Birkitt, received extra compensation for duties as his First Assistant, in the form of Letterman picking up the tab for her graduate law studies at the Yeshiva University Law School.”

Doesn’t this scream “Creepy Old Man!” to anyone else? I realize that he and his girlfriend weren’t married yet. But does that mean that the cheating isn’t as bad, or is it not concerned so wrong because they have kids yet? I don’t think so. I’m not saying that I think David Letterman should be burned at the stake. I think he’ll survive this, and he should because he’s delightful, and that everyone will go on and forget about it. I would just like some people to take note that he is not entirely the victim here. What he did was wrong and sometimes you have to lie in the bed you made for yourself.

Letterman is fine; he never was the “Family Values” type. Yes, he probably cheated on his girlfriend now wife. But at least he does go around claiming he is Mr. “Family Values” like some of our politicians (can you just see the grin on all “Fake News” reporters/commentators). This has been a tough summer, for Dave, for our economy but at least he did not end up on the “Republican 2009 Summer of Love” list: Assemblyman, Michael D. Duvall (CA), Senator John Ensign (NV), Senator Paul Stanley (TN), Governor Mark Stanford (SC), Board of Ed Chair, and Kristin Maguire AKA Bridget Keeney (SC).
