Prince William’s Touching Words

With Mother’s Day quickly approaching in Britain, Prince William spoke about his mom, Princess Diana, at an event on Thursday. There is nothing that can be said when a child is talking about losing his mother much too soon, as Prince William was only 15 when Princess Di was chased down by the paparazzi over 12 years ago. But I think that all of us do have so many different images of Princess Di – that of a true princess, a devoted humanitarian, an unhappy wife – that we sometimes forget how she was viewed by those who loved her most – her children. From Celebrity Baby Scoop,

“Losing a close family member is one of the hardest experiences that anyone can endure,” he said yesterday. “Never being able to say the word ‘mummy’ again in your life sounds like a small thing… However, for many, including me, it’s now really just a word – hollow and evoking memories.”

William, 26, was speaking at an event for the Child Bereavement Charity’s Remember on Mother’s Day campaign, which reminds people “to spare a thought for those mothers bereaved of a child or those children bereaved of their Mum.” Mother’s Day is celebrated in Britain on March 22.

Prince William told the audience at the event that he supports the campaign wholeheartedly, saying, “I too have felt – and still feel – the emptiness on such a day as Mother’s Day…. For those who have lost the one they love, rest assured they will be watching over you.”

While the words are very sad, it’s so nice to know that people like Prince William are so willing to stand up and share some very personal and touching words on an issue that may not seem like an issue at all to many. Holidays like Mother’s Day are days of celebration and happiness and we sometimes forget that for some, these are holidays that are filled with a great deal of sadness.
