Is Katie Holmes Just A Famous Mom?

I really like Katie Holmes and while I think it’s unfortunate that she’s married to Tom Cruise, who I’m not such a fan of, I don’t actually hold it against her. But ever since she’s become Mrs. Cruise and had little baby Suri, it seems that Katie has become more famous for being a mom and her friendship with Victoria Beckham than being the actress, Katie Holmes. She hasn’t really done any movies with real, or interesting, characters in them since Batman Begins and even that was during the very early TomKat days. Again I don’t hold it against her but it just sucks because I’d like to see her in more stuff.

And even recently when she performed on Broadway in All My Sons there was more talk about what her husband did for her on her birthday and the anti-Scientology protestors who stood outside the theatre on opening night than there was talk about Katie’s actual role in the play. Her most recent interview is in Glamour and she’s talking about – what else? Motherhood. From Celebrity Baby Scoop,

“The 30-year-old actress talks a lot about motherhood in the interview, saying that being a mom to 2 1/2-year-old daughter Suri “has been the most amazing experience – in an instant you become strong. You have to be a little bit wiser; it’s the most important job in the world.”

Katie admits that she suffered from some of the usual first time mom jitters: “During the first couple of days [with Suri], we would just sleep right next to her to make sure she was breathing. And I was constantly learning on the job, but Tom was very helpful and supportive.”

The protective mom says that sometimes the gossip goes too far – especially when it’s about her daughter.

“[Tom and I] were changing diapers. He said, ‘I don’t want you to get upset.’ And I said, ‘Well, I am upset.’ So we approached it together. But I definitely felt like—as a woman, as the mother of Suri—I want to handle this!”

The rumors that Katie is referring to, I’m assuming are the rumors that were spread like wildfire shortly after Suri was born that were in regards to Suri’s paternity. They are as ridiculous now as they were back then and while I do feel bad for Katie that she had to put up with that during what should have been one of the happiest times in her life, I think she could easily stop it by becoming more involved in her work. Then people could criticize that instead of her family. Or maybe that’s just my own rationalizing so I can see Katie in some good stuff again.
