An Emotional Night for Heath Ledger’s Family

It will be a very, very long time before any of us forgets about the tragic death of Heath Ledger that occurred almost one year ago. It was right around the time that he was finishing up filming his part on The Dark Knight and when I first heard that there was Oscar buzz surrounding him in his role, I have to admit I was a bit angry. I thought, ‘Well, isn’t this great? Heathy’s going to get an Oscar simply because of the circumstances surrounding the movie.’ And then I went and saw the movie. I have to tell you now, if he doesn’t get an Oscar for his role, I will be very upset. But even if he doesn’t get an Oscar (which he will), he has already received an award for Best Actor from the Australian Film Institute for his role in the film. And just as I suspect we’ll see on Oscar night, his family was there to accept the award on his behalf. From Daily Blabber,

“It was a bittersweet night for the family of Heath Ledger, who was on hand at the Australian Film Institute, to accept an award in the deceased actor’s honor.

Heath won the Best Actor honor for his portrayal of the Joker in this past summer’s blockbuster The Dark Knight. Standing at the podium, Heath’s dad, Kim, his mother, Sally, and his sister Kate thanked the group for their tribute.

“It’s been without a doubt the most difficult year, losing such a loved family member,” a teary Kate told the crowd. “We are so proud of him and humbly accept this award on behalf of his beautiful daughter, who we will cherish forever.”

“We are immensely proud of him,” Heath’s mom added. “Not only for his professional achievements, but in the way he truly cherished his family, friends and his precious Matilda. Heath was never one to accept mediocrity, he put his heart and soul into achieving what he believed was required and followed his passions with great enthusiasm and an insatiable curiosity.”

This is truly such a sad story and the fact that his family made mention of the fact that they were actually accepting the award on behalf of little Matilda…well, that just breaks your heart even more. I can’t imagine how hard it would be to stand up so publicly, in front of so many people, and say such heartfelt words and still manage to keep it all together. We love you, Heath. You will remain in our hearts forever.
